You keep hearing “high-need” and might wonder “what on earth is she on about?!” Especially if you didn’t have the pleasure to deal with a kid that is super-high-maintenance, this term might be completely out of your dictionary (and hey, your are probably not alone). It’s not a scary ‘diagnosis’, it’s not a made up thing that people use when their kids behave like minions of evil 🙄 (it’s also not a new ‘fashion’, like ADD was labelled a while back) – it’s just a set of features that some kids share and it’s a part of their character. As simple as that. Ok, nothing is simple with high-need babies (HNB)… <sight>
SOOOOO to raise a little bit of awareness – for the next 12 days I will try to explain each of those characteristics that high-need kids share. And yup, you guessed it – I’ll do it in RHYMES! 😆😱
Please note: In a way, all babies are HNB. Some are more than others and it can become a quite painful and lonely journey if you don’t know what you are dealing with. I know from experience. Once we realized that we have a HNB on our hands, we cooled off and went more with the flow. We ditched our expectations (what we thought and expected our baby to be, before he was even born), schedules, and, more importantly, we stopped stressing over all the “good” advice we got on how to “tame” our child who turned out to have bigger and greater needs.
Here goes the first rhyme out of twelve 😃🤓. Catch them all or wait for a summary with more detailed (and rhyme-free) descriptions (based on Attachment Parenting guru William Sears M.D. and Martha Sears R.V.)
- HNB are usually very INTENSE
